Hello! I am Georgia Riungu. My first name comes from the famous Ray Charles song and my surname from my Kenyan grandfather. As for me, I’m originally from the UK – born in England, but raised in bonnie Scotland.
My love affair with Berlin actually began with the language. Entirely because French and Spanish were oversubscribed, I began learning German in high school. I went on to the University of Glasgow, where I gained a Master of Arts in German & Hispanic Studies in 2011 – a really wonderful course that combined studies in German language, film, literature and history.
I first visited the Hauptstadt (Berlin) in 2008, when I took part in a student travel-writing project. The rich cultural scene, historical footprints, and the heady Berliner Luft had a profound effect on me and, when I came back to study at the Goethe Institut in 2010, I spent a few months working as a free tour guide.
After five years back in Scotland (first completing my studies, then working in Marketing), I returned to Berlin in 2015 and have worked full-time as a guide ever since. My tour portfolio includes: Berlin Highlights, Third Reich Sites, Cold War Berlin, Women of Berlin, Street Art and Potsdam. I’m also a licensed guide for Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial & Museum.
It really is a privilege to share my favourite city’s secrets with first-timers and return visitors alike and I don’t think I’ll ever stop being fascinated by this utterly unique place.
I love Berlin. I hope you will too!
